What Are Panic Attacks?
You have heard about others that have panic attacks. Maybe you have wondered if that high anxiety you have is a panic attack.
So what is a panic attack?
It is scary, that’s what it is!
Here are some things that may be happening during a panic attack:
Racing or pounding heart (feeling like you are having a heart attack*)
Sweating
Shaking
Trouble breathing
Tingling in your hands
Weakness
Dizziness
These symptoms may last for several minutes. The worry about having a panic attack in public can cause you to stay home where you might be less likely to have a panic attack.
You may have some or all the criteria of panic disorder.
“Some researchers think panic attacks are like “false alarms” where our body’s typical survival instincts are active either too often, too strongly, or some combination of the two” (The National Institute of Mental Health, accessed 12.20.2023) https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/panic-disorder-when-fear-overwhelms.)
Panic attacks or panic disorder can be treated with medication and/or psychotherapy. Talk to your physician to see if medication is right for you. Seek treatment from a licensed therapist specializing in anxiety and panic disorders. (Hey! That’s Me!)
Please see a physician to rule out heart problems or other physical ailments that may be affecting you..
