How Does Anxiety Affect You?
Anxiety can greatly affect your life in a multitude of ways, therefore it is important to get mental health treatment for your anxiety. It is also important to speak with your primary care physician about your anxiety. They can rule out physical health issues and possibly prescribe medication if you both feel a need for it.
Here is a short list of ways anxiety can affect your daily living and future:
Physical symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, stomach cramps, headaches, muscle tension, increase in heart rate and breathing, insomnia, heartburn
Psychological issues such as depression, irritability, suicide
Substance use
Social issues such as problems functioning at school or work, social isolation, poor or fewer relationships (See How To Talk To Your Loved One)
When you have anxiety, part of your brain called the amygdala, goes into overdrive to protect you. We need some anxiety to keep us from doing things that are not good for us. During anxiety, the amygdala can overreact when it senses something that it thinks is dangerous. This overreaction confirms to the brain that there IS something to fear. You then have a vicious cycle. Over time your brain is more likely to believe what the anxiety is telling you instead of the numerous times circumstances have told you otherwise.
Without treatment, anxiety will likely increase and affect your daily living and relationships. Therapy with a trained professional can help.
