Sex and Menopause: Hottt to Hot Flashes

Sex and Menopause: Hottt to Hot Flashes

When you hear the word menopause what do you think of?

Hot Flashes?

Many women do not think HOT SEX when they think menopause.  Why is that?

Things change as we get older.  Our bodies are not quite as kind to us as they were in our 20s or 30s.  Here are some things you may or may not have realized that are happening with your body and possibly affecting your sexual functioning:

  • More aches and pains

  • Less flexibility

  • Easier to become distracted

  • More tired

  • Decline in ovarian hormone levels

  • Possible medication side effects (Ex: SSRIs can affect desire, arousal and orgasm)

  • Mental health issues such as depression, past traumas, anxiety…

  • Decline in body image

  • Relationship problems/The “Honeymoon” is over

  • Not being comfortable with telling your partner your needs

  • Decreased lubrication

  • The list goes on...

Therapy with a qualified counselor can help with:

  • Relationship issues

  • Anxiety associated with sex or distracting from sex

  • Pain during sex (again, rule out any physical issues)

  • Low sexual desire

  • Difficulty with orgasm

Talk to your primary care doctor about possible hormone therapy.  If you are having pain or other symptoms see your doctor to rule out physical problems first.

How do you find a therapist to help with these problems?

  • A counselor must be licensed in your state.  If utilizing telehealth, you must be present in their licensed state during your session.

  • Check out the counselor’s credentials.  Check their state board.

  • Make sure they have training and experience in sexual health.  This may be on their website or you can ask them. Some therapists actually are not comfortable with the subject.

  • If you feel like you do not click with that therapist feel free to find another.  You should be comfortable, although it may be a little uncomfortable at times due to the subject matter for some people.

My Experience:

  • I am a Licensed Counselor in Michigan and a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor in Ohio.

  • I provide telehealth counseling.  Benefits include privacy from your home, no travel time to your appointment, credit card payments without involving insurance, HIPAA secure formats.

  • I have numerous hours of training in Sexual Health through the Beuhler Institute.  I continue to engage in intensive training.

  • I specialize in anxiety, couple’s therapy and sex therapy although i am also qualified to work with other mental health and life problems such as depression, past trauma, etc.

Thank you for reading.  Many problems you are having can be improved.  Don’t be afraid to look for help.
